Did you know your smile could be affected while you’re sick? Well, it’s true, which is why our dentists, Dr. Gardner and Chang, strongly encourage you to do all you can to keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape while you rest and try to recover from your sickness. That way you won’t need to deal with dental problems on top of your runny nose, sore throat and cough. To help you clean and care for your smile while you’re sick, our dentist recommends doing the following things:
-Brush and floss often: When you brush twice a day and floss daily, you remove the food particles, plaque and bacteria that reside on and in the smile. This can help you prevent dental problems, like tooth decay and gum disease, so try to make oral hygiene a top priority. When you recover from your illness, make sure to replace your toothbrush with a new one.
-Drink a lot of liquid: Drinking liquid, especially sugar-free liquid (like water), can help you wash the bacteria from the mouth and even help you avoid dry mouth, which is a dental problem that promotes cavities and causes bad breath. So, make sure to sip on water throughout the day.
-Choose sugar-free medication: Sugar-free medication won’t promote cavities when you take it, so try to replace your sugary medication as soon as possible. If you can’t do so, make sure to rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth quickly after taking the sugary medication.
